| hi frank,
just picked up my ukulele monday from my parent's home and i'm in love. i felt like a kid on christmas morning. i used to play an electric bass but my musical tastes have changed much since i first started playing and the for the place that i am now in my life, this reso-phonic ukulele seems a perfect fit. so thanks for offering them up.
i do love the sound but i have a question for you. i have been playing with a friend of mine who uses a wood-bodied duolian and this experience makes me want to have steel strings on my uke. is this something i can do without putting too much stress on the neck and body?
thanks for your help,
pat

Re: Joe Foster |
| I received my Highway 61 this morning and I am very pleased. I've tuned it and played it and I think I'm headed where I want to go with my guitar playing. I need to find some other pieces for true bottleneck blues but even flat pickin' is a new world. I guess I need to let it acclimate before I really start to dig into it but just listening to its voice is good enough for awhile.
Thank you

I was amazed to find my new uke on the front porch yesterday evening. I wasn't expecting it until later this week. This is my first new instrument, and I was afraid I wouldn't like it much, but it has a really nice loud tone. I really like it. Thanks very much for the discount on sales Taxes as well.

Thanks again and give my regards to your lovely wife.

Frank,
Got the guitar and she is a beauty. I've played nationals until the bottom fell out and went broke. Thanks for the pricing I really appreciate it. Nice sound but I'm a little rusty on the slide. Do you know roy bookbinder, he's a good friend of mine from many years ago.

a couple of questions and wow! |
Hi Frank, I LOVE my new tricone 202 Lily of the Valley which I ordered through the Ottawa Folklore Centre :) It is a beautiful instrument with a wonderful tone. I am learning my first slide song on it! I was wondering what you recommend for cleaning the guitar with. I have a cleaning cloth that the OFC threw in. Should I also be using a cleaner on it to help remove all the fingerprints? Also, I see on the website it has GHS bronze strings. Any particular gage you recommend for a combination of slide/fingerpicking? I love my guitar so much. When I'm not playing it my husband and I just stare at it :D It is a piece of art as well as a great instrument. Thanks so much! Annice O'Rourke Ottawa, Canada

Thank you Very Very Much Frank. I have recieved "my new Tricone" and I think I'm in love. Playing guitar has never felt this good. I think I was born, to have one of these in my lap!!! I am completely in awe of the sound that comes out of this guitar. First I tried Open D(boring), then I tried Standard tuning(same old/same old), Then I tried Open E , And Eureka!!!!!! this guitar came "alive with sound".......Unbelievable.(((Hope open E isn't Too Much Tension on the neck/body.what do ya think??? let me know))) I can't seem to put it down. My mind is reeling with possibilities. I can't thank you enough!!!!! By the way,...I like the action on this guitar, did you do anything to it, or just leave it as is, cuz you knew I'd love it? AND,...The new pickup sounds great too... a few adjustments to my Roland AC60 amp, and I'm playin' in a "guitar heaven" concert hall. WOW !!! I'm also impressed with "the Case" that comes with it. Very Nice indeed. If the house is on fire.....I'm grabbin' my Tricone,...everything else can burn!!!! Thanks again Frank.....Hope to meet you some day...Very impressed

RS-1E spider |
|
Frank,
Here is a belated gushing review on your spider guitar...it has taken me awhile because I seriously cannot put the thing down.
It is VERY DANGEROUS to go to your shop. We went to get a parlor for my husband (which he loves, by the way) and I reeeeaaally didn't think I would want another guitar (I have 3 Republics already that I use for slide!). Also, I never thought I would want a spider cone. All the spider cones I have ever heard sound very bluegrass-y. Which is fine; I assumed that's what they were made for anyway, but I play blues mostly. I only picked the thing up because it was so darn pretty, I swear!
The workmanship on it is outstanding, the finish is lovely and the inlay is really nicely done. It's really pretty. But what I noticed immediately was the neck. It's small and fit me perfectly. I thought, hmmm this might be great for standard E fingerpicking stuff; like Mississippi John Hurt. Then I played it and I heard a tone that was NOT bluegrass-y at least to my ears, compared to the big name traditional bluegrass spiders. It has a clean sweet sound, for sure, but not like I was expecting AT ALL. And there was a really nice bluesy tone to it, too. The intonation is wonderful throughout the neck. It sounds good playing blues, folk, newer pop type stuff, anything I try on it.
We have a Martin D28. That's what I've been using for fingerpicking in standard E; and it's great. I love it. But, really, all you need to know is, I haven't touched the Martin since I got this guitar, seriously. The tone projects better when it's miked up and it is soooo sweet and clear. The kicker was the neck; it's just so easy to play for fingerpicking, for my hands. I have looked at a lot of guitars for fingerstyle in standard E and have never found one that wowed me like this one does. For me, it's just absolutely perfect.
Darn you Frank! I am running out of room!! I want to come see you once in awhile and be sociable but good grief!
I'm attaching a pic of all our Republics as proof that living in the same area as Frank will make you fill your house up with guitars. Your service is, as always, outstanding and I will continue to rave to whoever will listen...thank you for being so cool and for making instruments that are truly helping people to play who might not have otherwise :)
take care, keep in touch, and thanks!!

Re: A Happy Customer |
| Hi Frank,
I received delivery of my first Republic guitar on Friday morning, and thought I would take 5 minutes to say thank you to you and the guys at Republic.
I must admit to being a little concerned when I read some of the negative posts concerning your guitars.
Having now received and played one of them, I can only conclude that the bad-mouthers have never owned nor played one of your products. Apart from being a stunning and beautiful piece of craftsmanship, my little Highway 61 has a rich sound and a great action. I say this not as a guitar virgin, but as someone who owns & plays several guitars, including Fenders, Martins and a Gibson. The little Republic has exceeded my expectations and I look forward to many, many happy hours playing it.
Thank you once again, I'm sure this will not be my last Republic guitar.
David Simester.

Hiya Frank! I'm in LOVE with the Highway 61....thanks again so much for taking such good care of me :) I love it.
Quick question for you regarding installing a strap button....is there a bad spot on the Highway 61 neck to locate this?
I was thinking about the base of the heel cap? Or perhaps on the heel, closest to the cutaway side?
In your experience with these necks, is there anything under there that I might hit with either of these two locations?
Thanks Frank! Andrew

The Reso-relic Resolian just arrived safely. Thanks for the superior packing. Very tuff and funky little instrument. That's the sound I've been needing. Very nourishing.

Hi Frank,
Just received my Highway 61 this morning. I felt like a kid again at Xmas! Anyway, opened the double box and checked it out. Very, very nice. Just tuned it to standard and strummed a few chords. Not having played a resonator before, the tone reminded me of a banjo. Gonna let the strings stretch before tuning it to open D for slide. All in all, I'm very happy with the guitar. Thanks again for your fantastic customer service!
OBTW: the t-shirt is really nice looking. I have a feeling that it will become my favorite! One question: are you out of the Keni Lee Burgess DVD? Didn't see one in the box.
Best Regards,
Daniel

Fabulous Republic Tricone |
Frank,
Thanks for the quick shipment, beautiful instrument and great extras you threw in. It's been a terrific experience buying this guitar from you. I've written up a little review which you are welcome to use all or part of at your pleasure.
I received my Republic Tricone by UPS only two days after placing the order (Texas to Georgia). It was packed very carefully and effectively (always a good idea when shipping UPS). Although I was surprised when I examined the case, which was of much better quality than I had expected, really nice and a perfect fit, I was flabbergasted when I opened the interior compartment and found a strap and capo, of which no mention had been made. This is sheer generosity on Frank's part.
Although I've played guitar for many years, I've never before played a resonator. The only times I'm aware of having heard resonators are on the internet, very recently, so I have litlle basis for comparison. Nevertheless, I'm extremely pleased with the quality, playability and sound of my Republic Tricone. The instrument responds to attack with the rich range of tone from nasal quacks and twangs to the bell-like voices that had appealed to me so much in the on-line samples, many of which are played by the fabulous bluesman Keni Lee Burgess. If you're considering a Republic Resonator, listen to Keni Lee's playing and you'll probably end up buying one. You won't be disappointed.

Hi Frank. Just wanted you to know how much I am enjoying the resonator I received from you. I am especially impressed with the care taken in packing for shipment as I had a bad experience with a damaged item in the past from poor packing. The extra effort makes all the difference in the world to me. Thanks for a great deal for the money. When I ordered I inquired about the Kenny Lee cd . You said you were out but expecting a shipment the following week. You asked me to e-mail you to remind you if I did not receive it so here it is. Look forward to receiving it. Thanks again. Glen

Re: republic guitars |
Well, Frank - I got the guitar. I had to change the bridge to raise the action just a little for slide. It was not very hard to do, and I was surprised at how simple these guitars are inside. I was quite surprised at how good the guitar was.
Here's my review:
Republic Tricone Dark bronze finish
This is a stunning instrument. While shopping I tried several recent Nationals and a 1928 National tricone. The Republic is a vastly superior guitar to the ones I tried. Great guitars are solidly built, at pitch the strings are not very tight or even "soft" feeling, and the tone is clean and pure. They are very, very easy to play. There is a feel of solidity to this guitar last encountered playing a friend's 1959 Les Paul Standard back in 1975. Intonation is good all the way up the fretboard, the sustain is fabulous, the neck is extremely comfortable (and wide), and the tone is clear, clean and beautiful, with no wolf tones found anywhere on the neck. I have several very nice acoustic guitars, all sound lovely, but this one stands out. I bought it for slide work, and it sounds just as I wanted it to sound with the slide. What I did not expect was how wonderful and appropriate the tone turned out to be for finger picking. The dynamic range available with this guitar is huge - much larger than my other guitars. I would have no problem recommending Republic Guitars to anyone. If the example I bought is typical, then this brand of resonators is the deal of the century.

Mahogany neck? |
Hi Frank,
I just bought one of your tricone relics used from someone. I love this guitar! The whole body vibrates and the sound is deep and mellow. I had a question about the neck on it. The finish on the back is solid black so I can't really see the wood grain. Did you always have these necks made out of mahogany. Just curious. And, is the nut bone? It looks like it. The guitar should be at least three years old and it has an unbound fretboard if that helps. Thank you so much for bringing quality resonators to a lower cost area of the market. Thanks and keep it up!
Atticus
PS: Eventually I'm going to put up a high quality video with studio mic to show the glory of this guitar. I'll send you a link and you can use it if you like.

Thanks, and a question or two :) |
| Hi Frank.
I am the proud owner of a new "Resolian"
parlor guitar with the aged steel finish.
I bought it from "The Starving Musician"
in Santa Cruz Ca.
I absolutely LOVE this guitar. You have
captured the "soul" of the tone I was
looking (listening) for. Price was not a factor
and I could have paid more for what I wanted. It was nice to
find a superior product for less money. Thank you.
Because I live right next to the ocean I was wondering
if there was anything special I should do to maintain
the finish or protect it from rust etc.?
Also, what gauge strings do you put on this
model? Any suggestions or recommendations for
a string type or manufacturer?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Take care and keep up the great work.

highway One... |
Frank,
wanted to let you know that I absolutely LOVE that Highway One you sent me!
I went to a National dealer a while back and played almost every model. I can honestly say that this reso sounds every bit as good as a $2000 National. Loud, chimy, very resonant. A full strum gets the whole body humming along. Could not be happier. If I ever want a full size, I'll order another one. This is a keeper!
Thanks for a great product.

Resolian Guitar |
Hi Frank, I'm not one to write about my experiences with purchases but I just had to tell you this. I drove up to Milwaukee (from Chicago) this weekend and bought a Resolian Guitar from Wades guitar shop. I was blown away by the sound of this instrument. I tried a dozen different resonators at various stores and this guitar made them all pale in comparison. How did you get that BIG sound out of this smaller guitar?! Pure craftsmanship. I have owned it for about 24 hours and I think I have played it for about 14 of those hours. I can't put it down. I also want to tell you that the quality of service I received from Wade was unsurpassed. There is no comparison to the service you receive from a small local dealer vs. your "Walmart-esque" big box stores. This is now my shop. You know how to pick your dealers, but most importantly...you know how to make a guitar. I have a suspicion that this will not be my last Republic guitar. It's great to be reminded that there is still quality products being made in the USA. Thanks again, Dan Gutierrez

Hi Frank – Love my Highway 61. Thank you. This guitar serves the Lord in our choir! The action you set up works great for slide. I prefer playing w/o picks but sound doesn’t project as well. Can I go up to a 16-56 gauge string? I play open E – Thanks for the t-shirt! Kevin

Frank,
I just wanted to thank you for the great service and for being a man of your word. The guitar looks incredible and sounds as good as it looks. The shipping was right on time and your packaging job was more than enough to keep it safe on the journey from Texas to Virginia. It was good to find a great quality resonator I could afford. Thanks for the Keni Lee CD and the Republic reso-phonic t-Shirt too. I will definitely be spreading the word about Republic Guitars and hope to do more business with you in the future.
Thank Again, Reggie Shaffer

Weissenborn |
Hi Frank ........ Hows things I have had the weissenborn for a month now , gone through all the different lap steel bars , strings , to find what suits me, subscribed to a wonderful website for learning to play the thing. I am SOOoooo!!!!! pleased with the weissenborn I bought from you , it is sounding absolutely great , I think it could well be a combination of myself improving on it . The instrument seems to be getting a louder tone to it, a little while back I got chatting to a guy who had a Weissenborn, I asked him a few questions about it as I was waiting for mine to arrive from you. He let me have a go on it , and I was not impressed with it one bit ..... It totally lacked any tone or projection........ here's me thinking I hope my one is going to sound a bit better than this ............... Well it did Frank ,it totally surpassed it in every way , for someone wanting to get into weissenborns this is a wonderful choice in a minefeild of different makes and exorbitant prices.
The only down side to it Frank is that the resos have been put on the back burner since I have had it
Finally Frank have you considered a case for it, I have purchased one, as I think they really need it, the one I bought was about $ 80 but I had to do a bit of cutting out on it so it would fit
Kind regards
Karl |

Hi way 61 |
|
I just got one of your highway 61 models and must say I've never found anything like it.It sounds better than anything I've ever heard including vintage National guitars. Now the question. My first resonator was a 1995 (ie Gibson) Dobro. It has a 10.5" cone with biscuit not a spider. Do you know what brand of cone they used and whether one of yours would improve the sound ? Thanks if you reply to this and thanks anyway for the best guitar I've ever owned ( and I'm 60 yrs old)

My New Resonator |
Frank,
Just thought I'd let you know that today was the day I received a Single cone brass body duolian resonator (# 805) from you - and I really don't have a bad word to say about it (which is frustrating s I really do love to complain) The sound is amazing, the finish is amazing, the look is jaw droppingly beautiful, it plays like a dream and the case it comes in is great. This is the first resonator I've owned, but I tried out plenty before going with yours, which stood out at me for being far more unique than the samey copies available form other companies, and you received some very high acclaim form Vintage and Rare in Bath, who also told me that highly respected luthiers, Mansons, were very impressed by the sound and quality of your guitars! I will be sure to return to you in the future to fulfil my instrumental needs, even with it being shipped from america. My only complaint is that now I've picked up the Res, I'm struggling to put it back down!
I normally don't send feedback, but I am so impressed with this product (and service) that I just had to let you know, and thank you. Hopefully we will be able to 'do business' again i the future :)

Ukulele fan mail |
Frank, I bought a ukulele from you around a year ago. I love the sound of it, and it has turned into a favorite instrument. I have, however, been haunted by the rumors surrounding National's resophonic ukes. I figured if my little Republic uke was sweet, a National would have to be much, much sweeter.
I have a little money put aside, and I've been debating springing for a National but I'd never played one. I've only read the online reviews. Last night I finally got my hands on a National Vintage Steel ukulele. The store had priced it at $1450. Almost exactly five times what I paid for my Republic. I'll have to admit, it was a hell of a pretty ukulele. Then again I like the looks of my Republic reso uke too. The National has you beat on details. Every little bit that I could see was flawless. I'll have to give them that. Then again, for that price it had better be flawless.
The point was not to spend my money on a nice looking wall hanger. How did The National play and sound? The neck and finger board felt different from my Republic. The neck was thinner and the finger board did not seem to be quite as wide. Some people might prefer that. I didn't feel the difference was very important. So how did it sound? Well first, it was not especially loud. My Republic can get much louder without sounding muddy. In fact I have a wood bodied soprano uke that is louder than The National. What did it sound like? It didn't sound nearly as good as my Republic. The Republic uke has a very sweet bell like ring to it. The National just sounded metallic. It didn't sound bad, but there was nothing special about it. Like I said, for five times the price of The Republic uke, it seemed reasonable to expect something special.
I ended up playing a couple of chords, running though a scale and handing it back. I wanted to go home and play my Republic!
I just wanted you to know that, from now on, as far as I'm concerned, the Republic reso uke is a big league instrument at a price almost anyone can afford.
Thank you so much,
Jon Nelson

Frank, Opened my new aged tricone this morning (ordered in November...kept until Christmas morning as a gift from my wife). I couldn't be happier. The quality and tone far surpass my expectations, which were high, based on your reputation. This guitar is a fantastic value, almost hard to believe. Thanks for the extras...much appreciated. Feel free to use this as a recommendation. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Republic Tricone |
| Hi Frank,
I purchased my Republic Tricone from Rob at Lonesome Train here in Australia.
This instrument is 110 % quality and the best guitar ever.
I own a Maton Jumbo and a Gibson Firebird IV and they sadly lie untouched as my Tricone is my main squeeze.
I play as a professional busker in Sydney playing in Martin Place and Circular Quay and people just stop and their mouths drop.
This axe makes me money ha ha !!
I have it set up with a Schatten and a Thinline lace sensor and use a battery powered Crate taxi 50 watter and Lord have mercy TONE TONE TONE !!!
My next gat will be the Parlour Resolian Polished nickel !
Cheers mate for a guitar that I am proud to play and have a tone that did not cost me my left kidney to buy.
Pete Phillips-Vass
P.S Rob at Lonesome Train is a legend. And a cheeky request flick us some t-shirts to wear when I out there playing LOL !!

Frank-- My new CD, The Traveler's Burden, should be out next week and I've already addressed an envelope to send you one when I get them. Wound up using your reso on two of the tunes on the album. The guitar sounded great, and the recording engineer marveled at how well it recorded. I've attached a photo of me playing your guitar on the North Shore of Lake Superior. I'll be sticking it on www.davidhanners.com when I finally add the photos. Feel free to use the photo if you want. (I've also attached a .pdf of the one-sheet I'll be sending out when I send the CD out to folks.) Thanks again for the great guitar, and happy holidays! David Hanners Roseville, MN

Another satisfied leftie here.
I came across one of your parlour sized resolian guitars in "Vintage and Rare" in London.
It was just screaming at me to buy it!!
I've been working on an acoustic blues album this year and thought it would help. I got a friend to convert it and...
Help? It bloody well transformed the album!!!
What a sound. I'm so pleased I thought I'd send you a track. ( or two )

Frank,
I really like this guitar that I just bought from you. For the price these guitars are a great value. In addition to giging I do some teaching and I do slide guitar workshops. I am wondering what kind of commitment do need in order to become a dealer. I think I could sell these guitars to my students and at workshops.

Frank, I recently bought the Duolian recently on ebay, and I noticed that the date of sale "12-11-09" was embossed on the headstock. A very nice touch. Thank you. It is a guitar I'm very happy with, and will never sell. My birthday happens to be 2 weeks after that date, so, it has that nice sentimental touch. Thanks again, Frank! Cheers, Roger

Can you convert a RS-1 to Left handed? |
Frank,
I recently bought a Left handed Republic Tricone (with dark antique bronze finish) from Twelfth Fret in Ontario.
They set it up for fingerstyle with 12-53 strings and low action. I can play slide on it too without a problem as long as I’m careful.
I love it!
It plays like a dream, has a powerful tone, and my wife likes the way it looks on the stand in the living room (a BIG plus).
I’ve never owned a National, but I have no desire now.
You have definitely gotten with the right people to make Republic guitars.
I own and love Eastman flattop guitars, so I appreciate well made Chinese guitars.
I really want a wooden body resonator with a spider bridge just like your RS-1.
Can the RS-1 be converted to Left hand?
If it can be done, I’m ready to buy.
Also, let me know the string scale length.
Thanks,
Phil Fleming

Tricone Resonator |
Hi Frank, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to make left handed tricones. I bought one from Robert at Lonesome Train Music in Australia about two months ago and I don't think I've put it down since. The tone and playability are brilliant for bottleneck slide and finger picking, right out of the box. The construction and attention to detail are excellent and the hand spun cones work a treat. I know we lefties only make up a small proportion of the community and it's costly to cater to us so I thought I'd let you know how much I appreciate it. If you ever see your way to building a lefty Johnny Winter let me know and I'll put my order in with Rob.
Cheers, Mark

Frank, I LOVE THIS GUITAR!! It plays and looks great and I can't put it down I went home and immediately played it for one of our online 'gigs' that afternoon and it was a big hit. Easy to play, light, great sound, great looking...THANK YOU so much for letting me get one so quick. I am gaga about it.
I posted a thread at the big road blues forum and they think it's pretty cool, especially w/ the Johnny Winter picture playing it. I even posted at the snooty IGS forum, Johnny w/ the guitar and a little bit about it, and they are actually behaving over there...talking about Johnny rather than the guitar, but I bet it got some hits on your site to check it out, ha ha. I sure hope so. I'm telling every guitar player I know (and everyone plays guitar including my dog you know). I think these guitars are going to be a good headache for you in that they will sell like crazy. I hope you sold everything you had at the show and got some good business. Please let me know as always if there is anything however small I can do to help you out in any way or promote your stuff :)
When I take it to Charley's to get the strap knob put on the heel I'll let you know what they say...the main luthier over here absolutely loved my Tricone when I took it in for a knob last year and said it was way better than any new Nationals he'd seen. He played it for awhile and declared it sweet.
I LOVE THE GUITAR THANK YOU FRANK :))

My new 101. |
Just received my new 101. Packed very well. The hard shell case is nicely made, gurranteed protection. So-much for the little stuff. Quickly tuned to open D. Played finger style up an down the neck , played great. Slipped a slide on my pinky for some blues, must admit, hard to get into Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters with such a big smile on my face. I must say that I was a skeptic being the low price. I now can see an affordable tricone, from Santa. Good service, good product, big future. Thanks from a proud new owner.

Hey!! It's here and I LOVE it!!!!!! What a cool little guitar you have made, bro! The finish is awesome and the tone is perfect, not bassy but very much of the cone-tone!! New tuners are also a great feature. It's a hit Frank! :D It's also very cool that Johnny wnat's it to be a "signature model". The news that he'll be recording an all acoustic CD is mindblowing to most bluesfans. Btw, I'm recording a new album right now for release in January, of course I'll put all my Republics at work on it!!!! Just want to say "THANK-YOU SO MUCH" for the great guitar!!!
I only had a very short while to mess with it and I won't be able to bring it home until next week but, when I do, I'll be sure to get you those pictures!
The Doobies are going to have a spell away from the road here soon, and I'll be recording the whole time. Can't wait to get the Reso-phonic into the mix!!! Of course, I'll call in some REAL talent for that! :-)
Thanks again, SO much… I'll be in touch soon.

Hi Frank
This is Terry Bell in Michigan, I bought a single Relic a few years ago. I just wanna say thanks and what a great guitar it is. It's been all over and anybody who digs blues and most of those who don't go nuts over my Relic and I swear to God it sounds better all the time. It's the guitar I waited about 35 years for, and I owned an old National!! I had to write because I was checking out the Johnny Winter pics. I got a big ole smile seein' him. Good for you, Frank. Awesome guitars.
Thanks, Terry

New Spider Bridge Model |
Hi, Frank. DuPree from The Delta Flyers. A while back you were kind enough to offer me endorsee pricing on a couple of instruments. Unfortunately, at that time, recording expenses kept me from buying them. If the offer still stands, I would like to get pricing on the new RS-1E model with a pick-up installed. I will shoot you a postal money order ASAP. Our Republic tricone has been getting a workout every week and it's still cookin'. It's time to add to the arsenal.

gig bag for resolian |
Dear Frank of Republic Guitars,
I am a happy user of Resolian which I bought from Guitar Shelter Japan. After using almost every type of National resonators I appreciate the compact size and the sound of your Resolian very much.
It came with a light weight hard shell case, however since I am using my Resolian on different live stages, I am in a need of a right sized gig bag, which is very difficult to find. I found through Lenny of Vintage Nationals, where I bought some of my Nationals, that you are offering a Travel Size Reso Guitar with a padded gig bag.
I would appreciate it very much, if you could send one of those gig bags to me. Just tell me how much it would cost including the shipping and handling.
I will pay through whatever method that would be appropriate for you.
Thank you and best wishes,
Kazuhiro Ochi 1-2-7 Takekoshi, Chikusa-ku Nagoya 464-0007 Japan
Hi Frank - I’ve owned one of your Reso tricones nearly a year…love it man. Hey can you recommend a quality slide manufacturer ? I’m thinking a Diamond slide maybe ? I need something heavy and sustainy. Congrats on your great products…I shoulda got the parlor sized too, maybe next year…love the clips of those too. Jim AdairHouston |

guitar arrived |
Hi Frank:
The parlor Resolian arrived a little while ago and I love it. It is perfect size for me and very playable. The sound is great and better than I thought it would be. The sound is a little rough around the edges which is ideal for what I play. I may even have to learn a little slide.
Many thanks for the great price and great service. It was a pleasure doing business with you. You really make the extra effort it seems and it is very much appreciated. The Resolian will be seen by other folks when I go to guitar workshops and I will be happy to recommend you and the guitar to anyone who asks. Now all I need to do is sell my other resonator guitar.
Thanks too for the t-shirts too. I normally do not wear product t- shirts but yours will get worn on a regular basis.

Re: Art Mayer's order |
Frank,
The triolian came today. Thanks, it's truly awesome. I'm glad I went with the resorelic finish, it's a unique piece of work. I tuned it up to open G and cranked out a few bars of Water Song. It rang out sweetly. I have to say it's the only resophonic guitar I've seen like this in all of Richmond VA... and I've been to all of the guitar shops in the Richmond metro area. It is really nice and well worth the money considering the Fender reso I've played for almost the same price.
Since I'm a novice at resonator guitars, I have a few questions regarding maintenance. I'm assuming it strings up as it looks, but I'm not sure if there is some special care I need to do to make sure the bridge that connects to the cones stays in place. Is there a source on line, a PDF, etc., that I can refer to - as to the anatomy of this guitar? Also, is there any maintenance I need to do to keep the cones in shape, etc. I'm not sure what the mileage is on cones. Do they get replaced after a certain amount of time, etc?
Anyway, just wanted you to know the guitar arrived in one piece and it looks and plays great.
Thanks Art Mayer

Frank, It is hard to find left handed instruments - especially a resonator. Just wanted to let you know that I find this to be an excellent instrument - great tone and stays in tune. Will perform with this on Saturday (2 weeks after receive). Great for slide - while great playability for hybrid playing as well. I will work on a YouTube to promote what you are doing. Republic Resolian - Thanks! |
|
I knowHi Franks,
I bought a new Republic Resolian from Vintage and Rare in London yesterday and I love it so much that I wanted to write to say thank you very much.
I saw it in the window when I was just walking past and it was literally love at first sight. I had to have it depite never having even tried out a resonator before let alone considered buying one.
I read an interview with Frank Zappa once where he was asked what advice he would give someone choosing a guitar. Rather than going into boring technical details, what he said was 'If you see a guitar that screams "Take me. I'm Yours", buy it'. I've always thought that was excellent advice and in this case it has certainly paid off. As well as looking unbelievably cool the Resolian sings like a choir of angels.
I had a quick trawl round the West End shops to try out all the others I could find before buying it but nothing came anywhere remotely close. I still can't believe the beautiful sounds that are coming out of it - not just blues but Indian ragas, jazzy stuff; absolutely everything comes to life. It's so inspiring.
I've tried think of a name for it but so far I the only name that has occured to me is 'The Dragon of the Southern Ocean'. It's a bit of a mouthful and sounds completey mad I know. However this instrument is really like some sort of mythical beast so it deserves a very grand name - particularly as its one of the aged ones with moons and stars on the front.
Can you give me one piece of information please? What strings are the guitars shipped with? I want to buy the same ones in future. I thought new strings would be an improvement and bought a National Michael Messer set but I only got as far as changing the top string. The sustain was nothing like as good as the old one so I put the old string back and left the rest of the original set on.
Thanks again.
Hope to hear from you soon and Happy Easter,
Regards,
Guy Hart
London.

A little feedback |
|
Frank,
I received my two republic guitars (a Parlor and a Duolian) last week in perfect shape. The parlor guitar is a great little guy to have next to my favorite chair in front of the TV. Set up, tone and finish are perfect. Anyone considering the RP-1 for fingerstyle or slide should not hesitate-especially at this price.
The Duolian is just plain awesome. It looks great in the reso-relic finish and is set up perfectly. The tone for slide has that hollow, crying quality like so many old Delta blues recordings. Really, I got this thing to "preach" the blues right out of the box. Can't stop playin' the thing.
I am delighted with both guitars and am now saving my pennies for a Tricone. Such a tremendous value!!!!
Keep up the good work and thanks for all the help,
Michael Camp

left handed tricone |
I just got a left handed tricone from Jerry's lefty guitars (the shiny brass model). I really like the sound. Very nice guitar. I noticed that the bridge is black. what is the material that the T bridge is made of? Also what is the proper string height at the 12th fret? I own a National Resophonic style O deluxe. The quality of your guitar holds up very well, especially considering the huge price difference. Keep up the good work. Jim

Hey Frank,
I' ve really been enjoying playing my "resolian". I was wondering what brand strings you use. They feel like mediums, is that right? For some reason I get so much more tone out of my slide playing than previously, not to mention that the guitar is just a blues monster! Thanks.

Hi, Frank Just wanted you to know it’s been difficult to put the new Resolian down (except to shower or eat) since I got it. What a sweet instrument-you have a winner here. The shipping box took a beating, it landed with a large thud on our front porch but everything emerged unscathed. So I tuned it to open-D and serenaded the neighborhood with “Paris, Texas”. Wow. I've been meaning to get in touch since I received my guitar a few weeks ago. I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my Duolian. I love this guitar! Plays like a dream, well set-up, finish is great. Tone is fantastic! I played some Nationals before I ordered and I must admit that this really keeps pace with them, both tonally and in terms of playability. Overall, I am really impressed with your work and would not hesitate to buy another one of your guitars in the future.
Thanks much!

I have played it for several hours and just don't want to put it in the case. I also appreciate the T-shirt. Thanks again for the response to my order and for an instrument that will be enjoyed for time to come.

Hi Frank, The Tri-cone arrived in good condition (a day before expected!) It appears to be in very good condition.(It was very well packaged and a monkey could have figured out which end was “up”).Good “bang-for-the buck”! I’m glad I waited and shopped around for quite some time (Years!) before settling on this one.I was getting ready to buy one of the many reproductions commercially available through music stores.I went and tried several out. After comparing them side-by side with Nationals, they simply didn’t compare in sound or workmanship. With the number of quality guitars I already have, I couldn’t bring myself to spend the price on a National (New or old). Just the other day, I was on “You Tube” and was watching a slide video. I believe it was Keni Lee Burgees who recommended your company. What I especially like about this instrument is that it has a nice vintage look (“Reso-Relic” - When I pulled it out of the case, my housemate asked if it was a vintage guitar – silly boy !), but it has a new neck which provides much betteraction & intonation for fretted notes than you would find on many older instruments. I truly think it is the best of both worlds.I really like the tone of this guitar. It projects -but isn’t overpowering. I am glad I found your company- I only wish I had discovered it sooner. You can count me in the apparently large number of very pleased customers. Now If I can just allow myself to get that cute little RP-1 Parlor guitar you also offer…(Thanks for your prompt response to questions I had about this guitar as well.) Also- Is there a serial number somewhere on (in?) the instrument? Can’t seem to find one located anywhere…(It’s not as if I haven’t pulled it out every couple hours to paw over it!) Best, Eric H… Oakland, CA.

Frank,
Thanks so much for your business. I just got the Resolian with the moon and stars last night. Its beautiful and I can't stop playing it. Its exactly what I hoped for and more. And an amazing price! Can't think of a better way to blow off a months worth of rent. Hehe. I hope you make a billion dollars. ; )
I perform fulltime as an activity leader/strolling minstrel at a convalescent hospital here in Los Angeles and I've been getting compliments all day on how beautiful it looks and sounds. I play childrens music too and will have a number of gigs this summer. The guitar sure will come in handy and make an impression on the kids I'm sure.
Also, just so you know, I first saw the guitar a few weeks ago at "McCabe's" in Santa Monica. I knew right away it was the one out of all the others. The very next night it sold to someone else! Your guitars are a hot item at that store. A bit of a buzz seemed to be goin round about Republic guitars among the store workers and shoppers.
All that aside, a flat out fine guitar sir. I'm quite pleased indeed. Honor doin business with ya.
All the best, C.J. Pizarro

new tricone |
Hi Frank,
This is the first chance I've had to write to you about the new engraved, silver tricone.
What a great instrument! I am convinced that it has a SLIGHTLY different tone than the bronze finished tricone. The bronze has a more mellow sound, almost like a dobro; the silver is a bit brighter. But what's really striking is the sustain. The notes last forever. There's no buzzing or ringing or any of the other problems often associated with tricones. All in all, it's just about my favorite instrument. I've been playing it non-stop since it arrived. The only thing is... I feel bad for my poor old Regal resonator. As nice as that Regal is--at it's really not a bad guitar at all--I just can't see playing it very much when I have these Republics.
I'll record with my Republics very soon and send you a link. Ros and I are working on some Loretta Lynn tunes and a few old jazz standards.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! And especially thank you for throwing in the hardshell case for my new tricone. I'll be travelling a bit, and having that hardshell case will certainly ease my mind.
All the best, Graham (Blue Pontiac)

Frank, I just received my new Tricone that you sent up with Mike the Trucker. I can't tell you how happy I am with it. It just filled the guitar void I have had for years. Hi Frank, The little baby with the big sound just arrived. I unpacked her right and started playing but I can't wait 'til I get home tonight. If you get good vibrations tonight it's the Minolian and my red wine that are putting this out to the universe.
The very best regards from the country of wine and miserable weather.
Thank you Waldemar

Hi Frank,
My name is Graham. I'm Ros Hartigan's husband. She recently ordered 1 uke and 2 resonator guitars from you.
The guitars came today, and I've spent the last five or six hours playing. Man, these are nice guitars. The tricone has a beautiful, rich, deep sound. It's very loud, but with that terrific sustain that tricones get. The parlor resolian is just too cool. It has a terrific, bluesy tone that I really dig, and a bright attack that rings like a bell. I'm very impressed with Republic guitars and will probably order another one in the future. Thank you!
One last question: when are you going to bring out a squareneck model?
With my gratitude and best wishes, Graham Cassano

Re: Thank you |
Hi Frank,
I've been playing your guitars all weekend, especially the tricone; and I have to say, I like the sound and feel much better than my Regal dobro. I can't wait to try the other tricone. And please remember, if you can, to contact me when the squarenecks come in. I'm putting a little money aside so I'll have some left for a Republic squareneck. All the good things I've read on line about Republic guitars are true.
Best, Graham

Hey there!
The tricone has landed and it's AWESOME!!
THANKS a lot, I love it!! It has that "clangy" tone-cone that you'll only find on a good tricone!
The relicing is by far the best I've ever seen, great work my friend!! I think the neck needs the same vintage look though, it looks brand new compared to the body.. ;)
Btw, I got it yesterday and tonight it has been on it's first gig, haha, folks loved it!
Pics coming up, Frank, and a first video too, I hope to find time to do it before I leave for my Austria tour on friday.. :D Think I'll bring the new Frank-o-relic along...
Later then,
BJ

Resolian has landed |
Frank,
The Brown Santa delivered the Resolian today. I have torn myself away from it long enough to let you know that it arrived safely and that it is — and let me emphasize this with upper case font — OUTSTANDING!
Thanks also for your equally outstanding customer service. I will wholeheartedly recommend you to anyone looking for the absolute maximum bang for the buck resonator guitar. And even to those who aren't necessarily concerned about price.
And now, I have to get back to that Resolian.
- Joe
Heya Frank,
Just wanted to let you know my new Resolian arrived safe and sound today. All I gotta say is WOW! I own a lot of guitars and this is by far the best sounding, best playing and best looking one I have. It's amazing how structurally and sonically balanced this little guitar is. The low end is powerful and tight and the highs sparkle without a trace of harshness. Not to mention it has the weight and playability I love but rarely find in other resonator guitars. What you do for the guitar playing world by providing a high quality instrument at an affordable price with excellent consumer service is truly amazing. Keep up the good work and I'm sure I will be ordering more guitars from you in the future.
Best,
Blake

Hi Frank,
I picked up the guitar this afternoon, tuned her up and away she played. Thank you very much for all your help and efforts. This is an excellent guitar. I am quite a novice player, but this reso plays very easily and looks and sounds great. I'm sorry I'm not a famous person that could give you a special testimonial, but You get two big thumbs up from me. Great job, great product, great service!
Thanks again.

hoopiejohn has shared a video with you on YouTube:
Frank,
Before you get pissed, let me remind you, I was born in Kentucky, and have lived in Tennessee near forty years - I claim both states. And men from both states died down there in that Alamo.
I really like this little guitar, and hope you like the video.
"Shuffle Rag" by Big Bill Broonzy (arr. N. Conato). I just got this guitar, and named it "Baby". You may wonder why I purchased this guitar, when I already have a wonderful National 12-string steel-bodied "Delphi" guitar ("Cecilia") seen in my other YouTube videos.
I bought it because it is not only a fine little instrument, but more importantly, it is "cute". When I go to the park and play my National, for sure I draw a crowd - that guitar has a strong stentorian voice - dynamic, and moving. But I've noticed that even though ladies seem fascinated, they are also intimidated by a big man playing such a large, powerful instrument.
But when I play this tiny little parlor-sized guitar, I come off instead as "cute" or "sweet".
So as a "Babe Magnet", I would rank playing this little guitar somewhat above walking a cute puppy dog, but, in all honesty, still below having a stable with two or three saddle horses. But puppy dogs eventually mature, and are no longer cute once they get prominent genitals; and the upkeep of horses is troublesome and expensive. So that's why I bought this parlor sized Republic "Resolian". (Bsides, it has a "flat" fingerboard, not a "radius": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fretboard#Parameters. I like that for bottleneck playing).
DISCLAIMER: THE ARTIST CREATING THIS YOUTUBE SUBMISSION HAS DONE SO WITHOUT ANY REMUNERATION FROM REPUBLIC GUITARS, AND THAT THIS SUBMISSION IS NOT A PAID ENDORSEMENT BY SAID VENDOR.
Having said that, I do want to thank Frank Helsley, of Republic Guitars, http://www.republicguitars.com, for his tireless assistance in the purchase, setup and delivery of this fine instrument, and for the first-class airline ticket from here to Biloxi, Mississippi, and for the four day, three night stay at the Beau Rivage resort and casino, and for the $500.00 in complimentary casino chips. I also enjoyed the drive back to Tennessee in the 2005 Lincoln Aviator, and a special thanks for introducing me to "Gabriella" from the escort service; I found her to be, not only a beautiful woman, but a personable companion, and lots of fun.
The rapidly moving fuzzy orange blob you may notice towards the end of this video is the tiny spider that lives in my camera.
Note: I wear the ski mask because I'm otherwise famous, and don't want this to "get out".

Frank, I ordered the Style O w/Hawaiian etching on Saturday and UPS dropped it off Wednesday afternoon. I unpacked it, tuned it up it and have been picking away on it since. It looks great, sounds even better and the service was the best. I worried a little about buying it on-line, but have been really impressed. I hope to stop by the shop and check our a couple of the other models when I am in TX.
Thanks for all the help!

If you have any business cards please send me some and I will put them out at my gigs . Thank you , Thank you , Thank you . If your ever in the Atlantic City area call me and I'll buy you lunch . Thanks again . Tom Kobialka New Gretna N.J.
Hello Frank. Just wanted to say that I really love this Tricone. It had a great tone right out of the box. And it plays really nice. I ordered a set of National cones, and installed them yesterday. Kind of a tone freak I guess. They fit right in. Had to drill the hole larger to accept the Republic bridge. Never done this before, and was concerned about how much pressure should be exerted on cones. The action, once strings were put on, is exactly the same. Can't seem to find much info on that kind of setup. The tone however, is even more beautiful and full of sustain. I am so pleased, I hope you don't mind, I went to one of the music stores in town here to show the owner. I saw that there were distributors down south, but not here in the S.F. Bay area. I recommended he check you out, and perhaps you could use him to further your sales here in California. I live in Santa Cruz. Thanks again Frank. I'm loving the guitar. Robert

Frank,
Hi. I just wanted you to know that I got the guitar on Tuesday. It's a beauty. Sounds excellent. Surprisingly loud and clear tone for such a small body. I played it with my jug band last night and everybody really liked the sound of it. Thanks alot!

Hi Frank, The new Resolian arrived and it's just what I wanted!
Thanks and best regards, Reid
Frank U R the man. Thankyou so very much made my Xmas. I got it purring. My girl friend with the long fingernails is playing it right now hope I can get it away from her. ;-) I'll be back with friends. Have a lovely Xmas n New Year. CHAP.
When last we spoke you asked me if I wanted to purchase the moon and stars miniolin...well Santa was good to me and put it under the tree. My wife (ktbnyny@aol.com) bought it off of ebay buy it now.
It is better than I imagined. The sound is amazing for the size and the action is great. The local guitar shops in NYC want to see it.
Thanks for a great guitar! Ron

Frank-
Just received the guitar today. Tuned it up, got out my slide, and man she sounds good. I really like the case too. Thank you very much for the guitar. I've always wanted a resonator, but couldn't afford a national. I am very impressed.
|
Hi Frank, I don’t know whether you remember me or not. My name is Seba Pezzani and I am Italian.A few months ago I bought a Miniolian from you and had it shipped to my mother in law’s in Illinois. I am just back from a month in the US and so I finally managed to have that little instrument in my hands and I have to say it sound great, just beautiful. I also own a 1931 Duolian but I have to say your little Miniolian does not wane in the comparison. Thanks!I don’t know what strings it has on. What type of gauge would you suggest me to use when I decide to put new strings on it?Thank you very much for your help. All best.
Seba

Frank,
The reso-uke came today in good condition and plays wonderfully.
I am so pleased, I guess I'll be looking at a Republic Resonator guitar soon.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks again
Mike Baker
Received the resonator yesterday afternoon. It sounds so good it is hard to put down. Stayed up til 2 in the morning sliding away and then had to pick it up first thing this morning. I think my wife may get jealous!!
Thanks again,

hi frank;
just wanted to let you know the relic 0 arrived today. that is a very fine guitar you are selling. frank, i have owned dozens of original early '30's triolians and style 0's, but have never heard one that had good intonation. i don't know how you do it, and really don't care, just keep up the good work!
oh yeah, please drop me an email when your reso relic tricones show ok? one other thing frank, are those ghs strings a phosphor bronze or 80/20? what are the string diameters of this set? that's a nice sounding string, i have been using martin marquis on my reso's, they sound great........for about an hour or two. so i am kinda watching to see if these ghs last longer, they certainly sound good.
i am not sure if you completely assemble your guitars, perhaps you have seen this item, but you may want to check these out frank, they would compliment your guitars nicely. these work well and are reasonably priced. they also look exactly like the original national items.
thanks alot frank, you have a wonderful sounding and looking line of guitars. just let me know when the relic tricones are in i really would like one of those too......................jim strasser
Hi Frank, My resolian guitar was in the shop getting a pickup installed. It just so happens that one of the best guitarists in the world was there and saw the instrument. He flipped over it. He never got to play it because the cone was off but I will be meeting up with him in the next few of weeks. He said it would be great for flying because of it’s size. His name is Kevin Briet, he plays a mean slide and his improvising is nothing short of astonishing. He has played with Norah Jones on her first 3 records and tour. He has played and recorded with Bill Frisell, Harry Manx, k.d LANG, CASSANDRA WILSON, CELINE DION, THE GUESS WHO, JANIS IAN.
Kevin goes all over the world playing and interacting with the brightest and best. Here are his links – check him out.

I’ll let you know how it turns out.
Best regards, David Gillis
